# *Final Fantasy VII* — platform rip, Midgar spine, Sephiroth/Jenova duality, Zack insert, and story sabotage (**AU-055**, open)

> **TL;DR:** Author thesis: ***Final Fantasy VII*** had a **grounded revenge spine** sabotaged into **postmodern false-memory chaos** — Jenova-as-Sephiroth + **Zack** as late scaffolding for Nojima’s already-planned “Cloud’s past is a lie.” **Script seam:** mid-game **Version A** (Sephiroth carried Jenova) left unscrubbed vs late **Version B** + Ultimania “misunderstanding” (§5.5) — **confirmed in JP PS1 + EN PC dumps** (§5.5a). **Ending tell:** Lifestream / short FMV coda is a **shadow** of *FFVI*’s long triumphant finale — author: unfinished at Nintendo rip, ordered Sony-era changes, **uninspired close** (§1.2 / §5.6); post-Safer **residual 1v1** reads as **Version B bolt-on** vs *FFVI* Kefka ending at the huge form (§5.6a); Version B **taints Lifestream rules** (fall-in → remote hub; only Jenova should corrupt; A spine = alive summon) (§5.7). **Zack tell:** franchise Zack is a **post-OG** protagonist; **in 1997** he is a **late, minimal, missable** insert **disconnected from Avalanche**; the **Zack delusion** is **not necessary** for Jenova/Sephiroth control of Cloud and **can be removed cleanly** (§1.3 / §6.4). **Music tell:** unused VII vault → later FF under Square IP is **industry-normal** (Rare Dream, Kirby cancelled builds, Morricone unused *Thing* → *Hateful Eight*; §1.4) — track ledger still open. **Cascade tell:** after Version B, **non-MMO** mainline centers on **self-delusion / trauma false-self** (Cloud / Tidus / Clive-class) — **MMOs out**; ***XII*** = **refreshing outlier** (Vaan; Ashe smashes Occuria stone; possible NSA-aligned agency; Gebelli→Ito→Tactics→*XII* battle-tradition end) (§1.5). **Name tell:** **Aeris (S)** = JP phonetic + 1997 playable EN (Baskett); **TH** = Western letter-form (cf. Sephiroth vs セフィロス / Hebrew *sefirot*); ***KH* 2002** industry rename → mass divide (§5.8). Same class as ***Mother 3***. **Documented:** platform exit; Zack late; Jenova-mimic; Kitase wanted ending “different from the past.” Weaknesses §10.

**Status:** Open — false-memory mandate cluster (FF7 × Mother 3); corroborate / falsify ordered-agenda layer.

## 1. Author’s originating thesis

> Let's create an investigation into the development cycle of Final Fantasy VII, specifically. This may overlap with other investigations, but the main thing we're looking for is the potential that when the project was ripped away from Nintendo, that the story was altered. That's the simple premise: there was an original story that was set in place and agreed upon, and then when they moved away from Nintendo to finish the product, they made certain choices in very few places in the game to significantly change the entire plot. The original plot was a little bit more simple, with a standard hero with a past and a standard villain. With a similar past, but different motivation. The beginning of the game was the part that I think was the most planned by Nintendo — the intro, the city, and how you eventually leave the city. The way you leave the city is by doing your final mission to attack, infiltrate Shinra. And when you get arrested in Shinra, an event happens that is extremely obscure and speculative. I think to this day, people have been arguing about this event: Jenova breaking out of her cell, transforming into Sephiroth, and then stabbing the president of Shinra with the Masamune sword. Nobody knows how to reconcile this with the new version of the story where it's not really Sephiroth, but Jenova breaking out on her own, turning into Sephiroth. Many people who played this game, back in the 90s and later, got a very strong impression that Sephiroth was the one that broke into Shinra and broke Jenova out. My main point is that the story is more or less the same story, without this huge change that was made at some point, where Sephiroth was frozen in a crystal in the north and the entire game's plot. We're looking at how many changes the plot actually required to make Sephiroth a shape-shifting Jenova cell rather than the real Sephiroth, and to make Cloud's backstory a delusion of assuming Zack's memories when I don't see any point in that change in the plot at all. It should have simply been Cloud's memories, and Cloud was a smaller soldier, and he saw what Sephiroth was doing, how he changed his mind, and how he burned the village, and that would have been enough for Cloud to kill Sephiroth. There is no reason for Zack to exist in the game at all. And the way that the later remakes took the Zack plot to extremes and made it all about him, and took the Sephiroth as Jenova cell plot, and came up with a whole new way that the Masamune is this magic sword that can manifest at will — all of these things seem to be changes that happened after Nintendo was ripped out of the equation. I'm absolutely sure of it. So this investigation needs to corroborate the claim. And the bottom line is that Final Fantasy VII originally had a much better and simpler story before it got moved into postmodern delusion, duality, and removing its ground to nature and replacing it with a complete hypothetical. And one more thing, there's a rumor that the original Final Fantasy story was inspired by some book that the Japanese were reading at the time. Now I can't find any citations for this rumor at all, which I find very strange. So I need to find even the rumor of the rumor. There has to be a citation somewhere that this game was based on a book. I'd like to know which book so that we can go find it and analyze it. In fact, this is exactly what I think happened. I think Final Fantasy VII was 100% inspired by a war story, and what's common is that after somebody publishes a war story, for some reason they publish something else or say something else to ruin the reality of that story. The notebook story is a perfect example, where it's about two kids coping during war and then suddenly there's this 3rd book calling out the 1st two as a lie. This is the pattern. It changes the player from a solid, grounded, lore-based fan to MKUltra radical who's looking for clues in chaos, following orders without question, and dividing and conquering its own fan base on the schoolyard by arguing endlessly over concepts that really do not add up. And the final version of Final Fantasy VII does not add up. In my opinion, in my conclusion, Final Fantasy VII was heavily sabotaged after it was ripped away from Nintendo under the guise of enhancing it with a superior Sony PlayStation rendering system. And the proof in the pudding is that the Final Fantasies that came after VII were extremely substandard and typical garbage, really, all of them. Without exception, they're all garbage. And the main problem was that they didn't even have the same kind of music. Some people say they did, but I disagree. I think what they actually had was leftover music from the 7 project. And this is exactly how pillaged and ruined the magnificent project of Final Fantasy 7 was. It was a brilliant moment of freedom when the Nintendo R&D people were using pre-rendered images to create some of the best looking games in the earliest days, long before 3D was necessary or feasible. And they also made Donkey Kong Country, which I'm researching, using pre-rendered technology. And then suddenly the whole thing with Square and Rare was sabotaged to the point that they could never make those kinds of games again. Only shadows of them. With a clearly divided fan base and a lore system that would no longer ever add up or contain any messages, at least nothing that can be agreed upon in the schoolyard.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Platform rip | Square’s exit from Nintendo = **story control event**, not only a media-format decision |
| Simple spine | Hero (Cloud) + villain (Sephiroth) with **related pasts**, **clear revenge/motivation** — no need for crystal puppetry or memory theft |
| Midgar = Nintendo-planned | Intro → city → reactor missions → Shinra infiltrate/arrest = the **solid early agreement**; later world is where sabotage nests |
| Shinra HQ event | President stabbed by Masamune; player reads **Sephiroth**; later lore says **Jenova mimicking Sephiroth** — permanent fan fracture |
| Jenova-cell Sephiroth | Removes the villain from the board; everything becomes **hypothetical will / cells / Reunion** |
| Zack | Unnecessary dual; Cloud as smaller SOLDIER who witnessed Nibelheim would suffice |
| Remakes | Double down on Zack + Masamune-at-will + cell metaphysics = **containment escalation** |
| Book → lie sequel | War-story inspiration, then **follow-up that calls the first story a lie** (Kristóf *Notebook* / *Third Lie* pattern) |
| Fan effect | Schoolyard lore civil war; MKUltra-style clue-chasing in chaos; no shared ground |
| Post-VII + leftover music | Proof the **peak project was pillaged**; VIII+ are shadows; OST reuse from VII pool ([Uematsu file](/influence/stolen_credit/nobuo-uematsu.md)) |
| Rare / DKC parallel | Same pre-rendered golden window; same post-rupture inability to remake the craft ([vacuum inverse](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md); Hamano/Wise lane) |

### 1.1 Author addendum — *Notebook* / Mother 3 / ordered false-memory agenda (2026-09-06)

> The reason that I mentioned The Notebook is because it was mentioned as the inspiration for Mother 3, or maybe even all three Mothers, at least in the sense that it was about two brothers and Mother 3 and that there was a very dark tone. I don't really think it matches up, and frankly, I don't think it was an artistic decision. I think it was something they were ordered to do, which is why Mother 3 was so compromised and wasn't even released in America. I mean, not just for that reason, but for many others. They weren't making that game to make everyone happy. They're making that game to divide and conquer, and I think the same thing happened here. What's really striking to me, what's colossally striking is that once you consider Zack out of the narrative, you have to really wonder why they ever thought to do that in the first place. And the answer is that Nojima wanted Cloud's memories proven false later, and Zack was the mechanism for that. I mean, it's amazing that in both Mother 3 and Final Fantasy 7, the big plot twist of the whole thing was that it was essentially based on false memories. And, frankly, I think that this gets in the way of a real plot, of a real story with real arcs, real characters, and all that, and becomes postmodernism chaos. The kind of thing that's agenda-driven, just like the Magipsy trans element in Mother 3. This false memory agenda was ordered upon our games because it has an effect on the fans. It divides them. Makes them more depressed, makes them more likely to suicide, all kinds of things like that. And at some point, some of these authors and writers, it seems like it always came down to one person operating largely behind closed doors to ask them the question, hey, you know, didn't you realize that you had a pretty good solid plot, which you basically ruined with your stupid plot twists? And now the outcome is going to be maybe a bump in the suicide statistic? I mean, is anyone paying attention to this? And they had to answer my own question, yes. Of course they are. It's just that that's the agenda. The agenda is to promote suicide and depression. And ultimately, that's my conclusion on the changes that we saw in Final Fantasy VII and likely in Mother 3 too. Somebody simply ordered them to make the whole plot based on false memories. Let's say of the past. I mean, the present and the future can be a fun adventure still, but for some reason, we're not allowed to be grounded in the past.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Why *Notebook* was named | Not as FF7’s secret novel — as the **documented Mother 3** literary hook (twins / dark tone / later “lie” structure in the trilogy) |
| Artistic vs ordered | Kristóf cite and Magypsy (“Magipsy”) beats are **not** organic craft choices — **orders** that compromise the product |
| Mother 3 non-US release | Symptom of a title built to **divide**, not to land cleanly for a mass audience |
| **Colossal Zack tell** | Remove Zack → no character-need remains → only the **false-memory mandate** explains the insert |
| FF7 ↔ Mother 3 rhyme | Both climax-identity twists = **your past was a lie** — postmodern chaos over real arcs |
| Magypsy / gender beat | Same **agenda-driven** class as false memory — payload, not story necessity |
| Effect on fans | Division, depression, elevated suicide risk — **intended** outcome class |
| Closed-door writer | One person (or one brief) can ruin a solid plot with a twist; someone **is** watching the harm math |
| Final conclusion | **Ordered:** base the plot on **false memories of the past**; present/future adventure allowed; **grounded past forbidden** |

**Separation:** §1–§1.5 are **author stake** (incl. agenda / suicide motive / ending collapse / Zack-delusion clean cut / music-vault reuse / post-B mainline delusion cascade). §8.2–§8.4 separate **documented** Itoi↔Kristóf and Magypsy localization reports from that motive. §§3–7 are **documented development / plot**. §10 lists **where the thesis is weakest against primaries**.

### 1.2 Author addendum — ending as unfinished / uninspired after Sony rip (2026-09-06)

> Honestly, the weakest thing about 7 was how it ended. Having to find Sephiroth in the Lifestream and then the, the movie ending was just a shadow compared to the ending of Final Fantasy 6. And I think the problem is, of course, that they hadn't finished the game when it was ripped away from them. And when the creators started being under the influence of just Sony, he was ordered to make a lot of changes. And honestly, he wasn't inspired on the ending at all. It just sort of just ends, this whole game just ends. And it's just a big sort of clue that they weren't able to meet the magnificent, triumphant, incredible, and long endings that they had done in previous Square games.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Weakest part of VII | **Ending** — not Midgar, not the chase |
| Lifestream / final FMV | Metaphysical hunt + short CG coda = **shadow** of *FFVI*’s long triumphant multi-party farewell |
| Cause | Game **not finished** when ripped from Nintendo; under **Sony-only** influence, creators were **ordered** into many changes |
| Inspiration | Ending was **not inspired** — it “just ends” |
| Tell | Failure to deliver Square’s prior class of **magnificent, long, triumphant** finales = evidence of rupture / sabotage pressure, not peak craft |

**Separation:** Reception judgment + “ordered under Sony” = **author**. Comparison to *FFVI*’s ending length/tone and staff quotes about wanting a **different** ending = §5.6.

### 1.3 Author addendum — Zack delusion removable cleanly (2026-09-06)

> The character Zack we know today as a major franchise protagonist simply did not exist in that capacity during the development of the original game. He was created very late in development purely as a plot device to make Cloud’s identity twist work. Because of this, his inclusion is minimal, entirely missable, and completely disconnected from AVALANCHE's motivations. While it is attempted to make this self delusion over Zack the reason Sephiroth/Jenova can control Cloud several times in the game it is not NECESSARY. Jenova clearly demonstrates that power several times without any need for the Zack delusion to trigger it. If that was covered in the dialog better, sure, but it's not. Zack delusion can be removed cleanly.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Franchise Zack ≠ OG Zack | *Crisis Core* / Remake **protagonist Zack** is a **later product**; that stature was **not** present in 1997 development |
| Late plot device | Insert exists **to make Cloud’s identity twist work** — not as Midgar-era character bedrock |
| Minimal / missable | Shipped wiring is **thin**; many players never meet the optional mansion path that sells the escapee story |
| Disconnected from Avalanche | Opening cell motives (Planet / reactors / pay) **do not** run on Zack; Midgar act does not need him |
| Control ≠ Zack delusion | Script **tries** to hitch Sephiroth/Jenova control of Cloud to the self-delusion; **Jenova already controls** Cloud (and others) elsewhere **without** that trigger |
| Dialogue failure | If control *required* the delusion, dialogue would **prove** necessity; it doesn’t |
| Clean removal | **Zack delusion** (identity theft / false-memory stack) can be cut without breaking Jenova’s demonstrated power or Avalanche’s Midgar spine |

**Separation:** Late creation + mechanism for false past = **documented** (§6.1). “Franchise Zack didn’t exist then,” missable / Avalanche-disconnect, and **control-without-delusion → clean cut** = **author** structural read (§6.4).

### 1.4 Author addendum — VII music vault reuse is reasonable (2026-09-06)

> The idea that Square used unreleased tracks from the FF7 archive/vault in later games is pretty reasonable. The company owns the IP and can release it later under the same name and nobody can say boo.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Peak-project surplus | *FFVII* (like other high-volume OSTs) generates **unused cues** that stay in the company vault |
| Later deployment | VIII/IX (and beyond) can burn that vault under **Uematsu / Final Fantasy** credit without a public scandal |
| IP ownership | Work-for-hire / Square IP → **legal silence**; fans may notice; rights holders do not “say boo” |
| Softens a prior weakness | “Leftover VII music” is no longer an exotic conspiracy claim — it is **industry-normal** pending a track ledger |

**Industry precedents (findings, 2026-09-06)** — company-/composer-owned unused material later shipped under related titles:

| Precedent | What shipped later | Evidence class |
|-----------|--------------------|----------------|
| **Rare — Project Dream** → Banjo / *DK64* / *Tooie* / *Viva Piñata* | Cancelled-game cues reused across Rare titles | **Composer-confirmed** (Grant Kirkhope; Rare Gamer / TCRF) |
| **Rare — Banjo beta** → *DK64* / *Tooie* | Cut level music resurfaced (e.g. Fungus Forest → Fungi Forest) | TCRF / Rare Gamer |
| **HAL/Nintendo — cancelled Kirby GCN/Wii** → *Return to Dream Land* (+ later Kirby) | `KbyW` / cancelled-build music becomes shipped OST DNA | TCRF / WiKirby |
| **Naughty Dog — *Jak II* unused** → *Jak 3* | Unused track variants used in sequel | TCRF |
| **Morricone unused *Thing* score** → *The Hateful Eight* | Orchestral cues unused by Carpenter; Tarantino/Morricone reuse decades later | **Director-confirmed** (DGA Q&A) |
| **Horner unused *Aliens* cue** → *Die Hard* | Same-studio (Fox) unused cue redeployed | Score community / Filmtracks lane |
| Capcom Mega Man leftovers → *MM9* | Older-era material redeployed | Already in [Uematsu](/influence/stolen_credit/nobuo-uematsu.md) |

**Still open for FF specifically:** track-level **VII → VIII/IX** ledger. Do **not** collapse into FF9’s **documented intentional** remakes of early-series themes. Detail table: [Uematsu leftover audit](/influence/stolen_credit/nobuo-uematsu.md).

### 1.5 Author addendum — post–Version B mainline = self-delusion cascade (2026-09-06)

> Nearly every mainline Final Fantasy game from VII onward (AFTER IT WAS MODIFIED INTO VERSION B) centers on a protagonist or entire society living under a heavy layer of self-delusion, fabricated memories, or systemic deception. Instead of just fighting an evil empire, the characters must first shatter a false reality—often one they built themselves to cope with trauma. In the earlier games, the main playable heroes—like Warrior of Light, Firion, Onion Knights, Cecil, Bartz, and Terra/Locke—were morally grounded, mentally stable archetypes. They were honest with themselves. If they didn't know something, it was because a villain hid it from them or magic wiped their mind, not because their own psyche fractured to protect them from trauma.

**Scope refinement (author, same day):**

> The pattern breaks on the MMOs for obvious reasons but continues on EVERY non MMO with the exception of 12 — Vaan is a massive outlier compared to characters like Cloud, Tidus, or Clive. The illusion there is cosmic and ends when Ashe chooses to smash the stone, declaring that humanity will write its own history, free from divine curation. This might even be an NSA aligned game/plot. It had heavy controversy when it was made and represents the end of an old battle tradition starting with ff1 (nasir) then the other guy after he was retired leading to tactics and then 12. So 12 does represent a refreshing outlier.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Version B as fork | Shipped *FFVII* false-memory / false-reality grammar is not a one-off — it **sets the template** for mainline after the sabotage lock |
| Core loop change | Pre-VII: fight empire / crystal / empire villain. Post–Version B: **first shatter a false reality** (self-built trauma coping or systemic lie), *then* fight |
| Self-fracture vs external hide | Ignorance used to be **villain concealment** or **external magic wipe**. After B: the psyche **fractures itself** to hide trauma — Cloud-class, not Firion-class |
| Early heroes listed | Warrior of Light, Firion, Onion Knights, Cecil, Bartz, Terra/Locke = **honest with themselves**; moral / mental archetypes remain stable |
| **MMOs out** | *FFXI* / *FFXIV* (and MMO-shaped products) **break** the pattern for **obvious** service / avatar / world-persistence reasons — not counterexamples to the single-player mandate |
| **Every non-MMO except XII** | Cascade continues through Cloud / Tidus / Clive-class titles; ***Final Fantasy XII*** is the **named exception** |
| **Vaan outlier** | Not a trauma-fractured identity puzzle like Cloud, Tidus, or Clive — street-level honest protagonist energy |
| ***XII* illusion = cosmic** | False reality is **divine curation / Occuria**, not a psyche coping with personal trauma; ends when **Ashe smashes the stone** — humanity writes its **own history**, free of gods |
| **NSA-aligned?** | Author: *XII* may sit in the **NSA-aligned warning** camp (human agency vs curated history) — same class language as HL2 / *Children of Men* lanes in-repo; **open**, not memo-proven |
| **Controversy + battle-tradition end** | Heavy development controversy; marks the **end** of an old battle tradition: **Nasir Gebelli** (*FFI*–III) → successor after his retirement (**Hiroyuki Ito** ATB line in documented staff history) → ***Tactics*** → ***XII*** (Matsuno mid-exit) — see [battle lineage](/influence/stolen_credit/square-battle-system-lineage.md) |
| **Refreshing outlier** | *XII* is not another Cloud-delusion product — it is a **break** that still shatters a lie, but the lie is **cosmic/political**, and the hero class is **honest** |

**Sketch (author typology — reception / theme inventory, not spoiler dossier):**

| Era / slice | Typical knowledge problem | Author read |
|-------------|---------------------------|-------------|
| *FFI–VI* | Secret kept by empire / mage / crystal; hero still **knows who he is** | Grounded archetypes |
| *FFVII* Version B → **non-MMO** mainline (ex. *XII*) | Self-delusion, fabricated memory, or trauma-coping false self (Cloud / Tidus / Clive-class) | Postmodern / psyche-fracture fork |
| **MMOs** (*XI*, *XIV*, …) | Pattern **does not apply** (service / MMO grammar) | Carve-out |
| ***FFXII*** | Cosmic Occuria curation; **Ashe** ends it by smashing the stone — humanity authors history | **Refreshing outlier**; possible **NSA-aligned** agency plot; battle-tradition terminus |

**Separation:** Series-theme cascade + *XII*/MMO carve-outs = **author pattern**. *XII* NSA-alignment = **author** (AU-class). Gebelli → Ito → Tactics → *XII* battle handoff = **documented staff chronology** with **author** “end of tradition / refreshing outlier” overlay. Title-by-title citations for remaining non-MMO entries remain **open TODOs** (§12). Ties to ordered false-memory doctrine (§1.1) and Mother 3 cluster (§8.4).

**Correction vs older repo phrasing (applied 2026-09-06):** [nintendo-sony-breakup.md §8](/influence/stolen_credit/nintendo-sony-breakup.md) and [Uematsu leftover section](/influence/stolen_credit/nobuo-uematsu.md) now state the precision explicitly: **Documented SNES-CD casualty** is closer to ***Secret of Mana*** than a finished *FFVII* Nintendo-CD build ([Unseen64 Square vs Nintendo](https://www.unseen64.net/2008/09/06/square-vs-nintendo-eng/)). *FFVII*’s documented next-gen choice is **N64 cart vs PS CD** after SIGGRAPH ambition — still a **Nintendo ecosystem exit**, but **not** the 1991 SNES Play Station add-on. Author shorthand “Nintendo-era / disc politics” remains; literal “SNES-CD *was* FF7” is **overspecific**.

## 4. Midgar spine — “most planned” segment (author + evidence)

**Author:** Intro, city, reactor missions, leave-via-Shinra infiltrate are the **Nintendo-agreed** core.

**Documented affinities (not Nintendo employment proof):**

| Midgar beat | Notes |
|-------------|--------|
| Opening train → Reactor 1 | Survives from early eco-terrorism framing; Joe draft had **bombers as villains**; final flips player to **AVALANCHE** |
| Pre-rendered Midgar | Exactly the Alone in the Dark / cinematic field method Kitase pushed ([Famitsu / Lifestream Kitase](https://thelifestream.net/weekly-famitsu-issue-no-1224-yoshinori-kitase-interview/); GamesRadar) |
| Sector 7 plate / media blame | Already filed as PP grammar in [FF I–VII Tartaria dossier §6](/influence/predictive_programming/investigations/final-fantasy-i-vii-tartaria-mudflood-predictive-programming-investigation.md#6-final-fantasy-vii--ecoterrorism-protagonists-and-sector-7-false-flag-grammar) |
| Shinra HQ arrest → President dead + Masamune | **Exit Midgar** hinge; identity of the killer is the fracture (§5) |

**Working read:** Author is right that Midgar **feels** like a complete short game that **hands off** to a different metaphysical act. That handoff **coincides** with the Jenova-Reunion machinery. Whether Midgar was “Nintendo R&D planned” remains **unproven** (§10.1).

## 5. Sephiroth vs Jenova — plot inventory and the Shinra stab

### 5.1 What players see (phenomenology — author strength)

| Scene / phase | Naive 1997 impression | Later / Ultimania clarification |
|---------------|----------------------|----------------------------------|
| Shinra building: empty Jenova tank; President impaled by Masamune | **Sephiroth** broke Jenova out and killed the President | Jenova’s **main body** escapes, **mimics Sephiroth**, kills President ([Ultimania Omega via Ryu Kaze](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197341-final-fantasy-vii/faqs/42137); [Reunion Theory wiki](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Reunion_Theory)) |
| Chase across world; “Sephiroth” sightings | Tracking the man who burned Nibelheim | Tracking **Jenova pieces / clones** under Sephiroth’s will |
| North Crater crystal figure | Sephiroth regenerating / waiting | **Real body** rebuilding while consciousness puppets cells |
| Final battles | Fight **Sephiroth** (real body / final form) | Jenova forms → Bizarro → **Safer∙Sephiroth** → **extra** Cloud vs residual will (Omnislash theater) |

**Author point (valid as reception history):** Decades of forum argument prove the **shipped presentation** and the **clarified metaphysics** do not land as one story for a schoolyard audience. That is evidence of **narrative failure / fracture**, even if Square intended the double layer.

### 5.0a 1997 player-facing text vs later Ultimania (R3/R6 specimen)

| Era | How the President’s death is sold | Source class |
|-----|-----------------------------------|--------------|
| **In-game / contemporary walkthroughs** | Empty Jenova tank; blood trail; Masamune in the President; **Palmer / Heidegger / Cloud treat the actor as Sephiroth** | Game script; [Wikibooks Shin-Ra HQ](https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII/Walkthrough/Infiltrating_Shin-Ra_HQ); [opatil walkthrough](https://ff7.opatil.com/eng/story/c07.html) (“person who kills President Shinra is Sephiroth”) |
| **Later Ultimania / anniversary profiles** | Headless Jenova awakens, **takes Sephiroth’s form**, murders President; real body regenerating at North Crater | [10th Anniversary Ultimania Sephiroth profile (Lifestream tr.)](https://thelifestream.net/lifestream-projects/translations/523/sephiroth-character-profile-p76-81/); [Reunion Theory wiki](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Reunion_Theory) citing Ultimania Omega |

**Read:** This is the cleanest **documented** half of the author’s fracture claim — **R6 shell** at ship (crime scene grammar = Sephiroth did it) + **R3** identity substitution in later official lore. It does **not** by itself prove the substitution was inserted *because* of the Sony move; it does prove the **double story** the schoolyard never reconciled.

### 5.2 Kitase’s *Jaws* method (documented — cuts both ways)

Kitase (GamesRadar retrospective): he wanted Sephiroth as an **overwhelming threat** not “life-sized”; solution = present him **indirectly**, show **aftermath** (butchered President; Midgar Zolom), delay the source — **Spielberg *Jaws***.

| Reading | Implication |
|---------|-------------|
| **Author-hostile** | Absent villain + Jenova mimic was **Kitase’s aesthetic**, not a post-Nintendo patch — weakens “Sony sabotage” as sole cause |
| **Author-friendly** | *Jaws* staging **creates** the exact ambiguity that later Ultimania / Remake lore **weaponizes** into cell theology; a simpler “Sephiroth did it” cut would have matched the Midgar crime-scene grammar without the crystal detour |

### 5.3 Minimal change surface (author question: “how many changes?”)

Speculative **edit list** if Sephiroth were simply **alive and operating** after Nibelheim (author preferred spine):

| Change class | Likely required edits | Scope |
|--------------|----------------------|-------|
| Shinra HQ | One cutscene + dialogue: Sephiroth (not empty tank mystery) takes Jenova / kills President | **Small** |
| Chase encounters | Replace “Jenova∙BIRTH/LIFE/DEATH” framing with Sephiroth or his agents | **Medium** |
| Black cloaks / Reunion | Drop or rebrand as Sephiroth’s cult / experiments without cell-magnet metaphysics | **Medium–large** |
| North Crater crystal | Replace with Sephiroth’s base / fortress / mako throne — still a final dungeon | **Medium** |
| Cloud motivation | Nibelheim witness + personal kill = enough (author) | **Removes Zack dependency** |
| Lifestream god plan | Sephiroth’s **alive** revenge **using Jenova** (genes / cargo) — Lifestream stays Planet/Aerith spiritual medium, **not** his Wi‑Fi (§5.7) | **Tone restore**; cuts B’s fall-in remote-control |

**Author conclusion:** The **Jenova-as-Sephiroth** layer is a **high-leverage small surface** — few scenes, whole plot ontology flips. That matches the thesis’s “very few places.”

**Documented counter:** Those “few places” are load-bearing in **Ultimania Omega** as shipped canon, not proven as a post-1996 patch file.

**Dialogue-only undo (Jenova-mimic layer):** Script deep dive (§5.5) supports the author’s later read that **most** of Version A already **ships**; restoring grounded Sephiroth is largely **rewriting the late Version B bombs** (Whirlwind + Hojo) and **leaving** Midgar/cargo-ship grammar alone — not deleting FMVs of Jenova morphing into Sephiroth (**none exist** in the 1997 FMV set). Zack undo still needs the **Mideel Lifestream event** casting, not text alone (§6.3).

### 5.4 Author preferred villain motive (register, not proven early draft)

> Sephiroth was simply angry that he was genetically altered and decided to take revenge on the world by using those same alien genes to challenge the world and take it over.

**Status:** Coherent **simplified** reading of Nibelheim → revenge. Shipped game **adds** Cetra misunderstanding, Reunion, Meteor/Lifestream godhood, and cell-puppetry. No recovered Sakaguchi/Nojima draft yet that states the simple version as the **locked Nintendo agreement**.

### 5.5 Version A leftover dialogue — incomplete scrub inventory (2026-09-06)

**Author finding (verbatim sense):** The cargo-ship “**He was carrying Jenova**” lines **are in the shipped game**; under Version B they should have been rewritten. They were **not fully scrubbed**. Disc 1–mid Disc 2 still teaches a **mobile Sephiroth who stole Mom and walked**; late game + guides teach **Jenova-body mimic + crater-bound real body**. That mismatch is the fracture.

#### Two ontologies (working labels)

| | **Version A** (grounded chase — what early–mid script *sells*) | **Version B** (Jenova-mimic / Reunion — late game + Ultimania) |
|--|---------------------------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Who left Shinra? | **Sephiroth** broke in, took Jenova, killed the President | **Jenova’s main body** awakens, **mimics Sephiroth**, kills President |
| Logistics | Sephiroth **carries** Jenova across the world toward the crater | Jenova-pieces / clones move under Sephiroth’s will (**Reunion**); real Sephiroth already regenerating at **Northern Crater** |
| What the party chases | The man | Mimic-flesh / fragments until Whirlwind |
| When plan unlocks | After he reaches crater **with** mother / Black Materia path | Crater body + assembled will / Materia |

**Shinra HQ staging (both versions):** No on-screen Sephiroth carrying Jenova out. Empty tank + blood trail + Masamune + **Palmer dialogue** only. First on-screen “Sephiroth” figure in the chase = **cargo ship**. (*Remake* later stages kill + cloaked body-carrier — different product.)

#### Smoking gun outside the ROM

Ultimania Omega (*Jenova inside the ship*, ~p.112; [Ryu Kaze / GameFAQs tr.](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197341-final-fantasy-vii/faqs/42137)):

> This [that Jenova was being carried by Sephiroth] was a **misunderstanding**. The arm was not carried, but rather was detached here.

**Read:** Square’s own guide **names** the cargo-ship party lines as wrong — without rewriting them in-game. That is exactly the author’s “left in by mistake / incomplete scrub” phenomenology, whether the studio called it “mystery” or simply never finished the dialogue pass. **Documented:** the caption. **Author:** scrub failure = sabotage seam.

#### Inventory — Version A leftovers (shipped English via [Yinza complete script](https://www.yinza.com/Fandom/Script.html); cross-check [letao](http://letao.is-a-geek.net/ff7script/part6.html))

Lines below treat the chase actor as **physically Sephiroth** and/or **Jenova as cargo he took**. Under Version B they are false, party-error, or NPC rumor — yet they dominate until Whirlwind.

| # | Location (approx.) | Line / beat (English) | Why it is Version A grammar |
|---|--------------------|----------------------|-----------------------------|
| A1 | Shinra HQ — Midgar NPC | Woman: black-cloaked man “**carrying a wicked-looking sword**” | Physical man with Masamune, not “specimen walked” |
| A2 | Shinra HQ — office | Cloud: “**Sephiroth’s!!**” / Tifa: “**Sephiroth is alive?**” / Cloud: “Only Sephiroth can use that sword” | Crime-scene = Sephiroth |
| A3 | Shinra HQ — Palmer | “**Sephiroth came**… I saw him with my own eyes… heard his voice” (Promised Land) | Eyewitness of **him**, not “I saw a monster” |
| A4 | Exit Midgar | Cloud: “**Sephiroth is alive.** I …I have to settle the score.” | Mobile living villain |
| A5 | Marshes / Midgar Zolom | Cloud: “**Did Sephiroth… do this……?**” / party strength-react | Physical feat by the man |
| A6 | Choco farm NPC | Black-cape man headed into marshes (implied same chase) | One traveler on foot |
| A7 | Mythril Mine / Turks | Elena: go after “**Sephiroth, who’s heading for Junon Harbor**”; Tseng: “Don’t let Sephiroth get away”; “**Sephiroth reappeared**” | Tracking a **person** with a destination |
| A8 | Junon soldiers | Rumor “**it was Sephiroth**” who killed soldiers days ago | Same |
| A9 | **Cargo ship** (load-bearing) | Cloud: “**Sephiroth! You’re alive!**”; after Jenova∙BIRTH: “**…Jenova. The arm of Jenova.**” / Barret: “**walkin’ around with that thing?**” / Tifa: “**He’s been carrying this thing around?**” / Red XIII: “**Sephiroth took Jenova**…” / Cloud: “**So it WAS Sephiroth.**” | Explicit **carrier** ontology |
| A10 | Cargo ship — Cloud summary | “Then Sephiroth came back and killed President Shinra. And then just now **all of us saw Sephiroth. He was carrying Jenova with him.** …go to the Promised Land **with his mother, Jenova**.” | Full Version A press release in one box |
| A11 | Cargo ship — exit | “**Sephiroth… is alive…** The Promised Land…” | Same |
| A12 | Costa del Sol | Rufus: “**I heard Sephiroth was on board.**” / Cloud: vacation vs “**after Sephiroth**” / “**I’ll go anywhere Sephiroth is at!**” | Shinra + party agree: he was aboard |
| A13 | Gold Saucer / Dio letter P.S. | “I just recently **met Sephiroth**… headed… towards **Gongaga**” | Comic but still **person-sighting** grammar |
| A14 | Nibelheim return / Vincent | “**missing, but has just recently reappeared.** He has taken many lives and is seeking the Promised Land.” | Alive wanderer |
| A15 | Gold Saucer / world chase talk | Cloud: “**We are going after Sephiroth.** Sephiroth must be in search of the Promised Land.” / Tifa: “**traveling the world** because he’s searching…” | Map-as-manhunt |
| A16 | Rocket Town | Rufus / Cid / Cloud: “**going after Sephiroth**” toward Temple | Same |
| A17 | Temple of the Ancients | Repeated “**Where are you!? Sephiroth!!**”; Tseng cut down by him; “**Mother… Soon… we will become one**”; Cloud: Sephiroth has “**lots of different flunkies**” | Treats on-screen actor as Sephiroth (afterimages are weird but named Sephiroth) |
| A18 | Forgotten City / Aerith | Cloud: “**…and so is Sephiroth.**”; after murder: Sephiroth speech “**All that is left is to go North. The ‘Promised Land’ waits for me**…” then flies off → Jenova∙LIFE | Man announces **his** northern journey; Jenova fight is leftover piece (same A pattern as cargo ship) |
| A19 | Post-Aerith vow | Cloud: “**He** destroyed my hometown… **killed Aeris**… I’ll never forgive… **Sephiroth**.” / party: “**Which way’d that damn foo’ Sephiroth go?**” | Credits **him** with the kill; continues manhunt |
| A20 | Icicle / north approach | Cloud: “Sephiroth said… **Head North**…” | Following **his** directions |

**Pattern:** From Midgar exit through Aerith’s death, the script almost never says “we might be chasing a Jenova puppet.” It says **Sephiroth**, **alive**, **heading**, **carrying**, **took**, **settle the score**.

#### Version B insertion points (what *was* scrubbed / overwritten late)

| # | Location | Beat | Function |
|---|----------|------|----------|
| B1 | Whirlwind Maze after Jenova∙DEATH | Tifa: “**Not Sephiroth!?** …**wasn’t Sephiroth we’ve been after?**” / Yuffie: “**following this… thing?**” / Vincent: “**weren’t in pursuit of Sephiroth…?**” | Party **explicitly** learns A was wrong |
| B2 | Same | Cloud: Jenova cells / **Reunion**; “**The real Sephiroth is just beyond here**” | Splits mimic chase from crater body |
| B3 | Whirlwind illusion | “**ability to change one’s looks… is the power of Jenova**”; Cloud as Hojo construct / Tifa-memory puppet | Ontology bomb |
| B4 | Crater — Hojo | “**Jenova itself began to move away from the Shinra Building**… it was all Sephiroth’s doing” (will / clones) | Guide-level Version B in NPC mouth |
| B5 | Forgotten City post-fight | Speaker credit flips **Sephiroth → Jenova** (“**Beacause, you are…… a puppet**”) | Ultimania: altar Sephiroth was Jenova-mime ([Ryu Kaze](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197341-final-fantasy-vii/faqs/42137)) |
| B6 | Ultimania Omega | Cargo “carrying” = **misunderstanding**; President killer = Jenova body in Sephiroth form | **External** scrub Square did not finish **inside** mid-game boxes |

**Early-draft direction (important):** Ultimania early cargo script was *more* explicit Jenova (cape opens → **hand** shoots out). Shipped game **softened** that mid-game tell, **kept** A9–A10 carrier dialogue, then **parked** the identity flip at Whirlwind + guides. Author-friendly: incomplete rewrite. Author-hostile: intentional wrong-early mystery (*Jaws* + unreliable Cloud). Both explain the same seam; only the **motive** differs.

#### What this does / does not prove

| Claim | Tier |
|-------|------|
| Mid-game script overwhelmingly sells Version A | **Documented** (table A1–A20) |
| Late script + Ultimania sell Version B and call A a misunderstanding | **Documented** |
| No 1997 FMV of Jenova mutating into Sephiroth | **Documented** (FMV lists; morph is lore, not movie) |
| Leftover A lines = **incomplete scrub / mistake** | **Author** (vs intentional misdirection) |
| Incomplete scrub = **post-Nintendo sabotage** | **Author / inferred** — needs dated draft showing A locked, then B patched after platform exit |

**Minimal fix if A were intended canon:** Keep A1–A20; rewrite B1–B4 (and soft B5 credit); leave crystal FMV as “Sephiroth waiting after the hike.” That matches §5.3’s small surface.

### 5.5a Dump verification — EN PC + JP PS1 (2026-09-07)

**Sources (mod repo, tracked text):** [7h-ff7-plot-rewrite](https://gitlab.com/clevertree1/7h-ff7-plot-rewrite) `work/touph-dump/` (Steam Edition EN via touphScript; **713** `.txt`) and `work/jp-untrans/` (JP PS1 **SLPS_007.00** Disc 1 via cebix `untrans`; **1376** `.txt`). EN ≠ 1997 PS1 English; JP **is** 1997 published Japanese used dialogue.

**Verdict:** The Version A / Version B seam is **not an English-localization artifact**. The same ontology split ships in **original Japanese**.

| Seam beat | EN dump (field id) | JP dump (same id) | Tier |
|-----------|--------------------|-------------------|------|
| Cloud summary: **Sephiroth carrying Jenova** / mother → Promised Land | `shpin_3.txt` — “He was carrying Jenova with him.” / “Sephiroth took Jenova…” | `field/shpin_3.txt` — 「ジェノバを持ち歩いている」/ 「セフィロスがジェノバを持ちだした」 | **A — both languages** |
| Midgar: **Sephiroth is alive** (Masamune grammar) | `whitebg3.txt` / `blin70_*.txt` etc. | `roadend.txt` 「セフィロスは生きている」; `blin70_*.txt` same sense | **A — both** |
| Rufus: Sephiroth **on board** cargo ship | `del1.txt` / `del12.txt` — “I heard Sephiroth was on board.” | `del12.txt` — 「セフィロスが乗っていたらしいな」 | **A — both** |
| Whirlwind party: **wasn’t Sephiroth we’ve been after** | `trnad_1.txt` (Tifa / Red / Yuffie / Vincent lines) | `field/trnad_1.txt` — 「セフィロスじゃなかったの?」 etc. | **B — both** |
| Cloud: **real Sephiroth is just beyond** | `trnad_1.txt` | 「本当のセフィロスは / この奥にいるんだ」 | **B — both** |
| “End of this **body’s usefulness**” | `trnad_4.txt` | `trnad_4.txt` — 「この身体の役目はな」 | **B — both** |
| Hojo: **real Sephiroth died five years ago**; **Jenova itself began to move** | `trnad_52.txt` | `trnad_52.txt` — 「セフィロスが死んだ直後」; 「ジェノバも移動を始めた」 | **B — both** |
| Sephiroth: looks/voice = **power of Jenova**; built from **Tifa’s memories** | `nivl_b2.txt` / `nivl_b22.txt` | `nivl_b22.txt` — 「ジェノバの能力」; 「{TIFA}の記憶にあわせて」 | **B — both** |

**Zack thinness (dump counts):** EN name “Zack” across many **map variants** of the same scenes (~37 files; stems mostly Gongaga / optional Nibelheim / truck flashback). JP 「ザックス」 in only **5** files (`gomin`, `gongaga`, `nvmkin22`, `fship_3`, `trackin2`) — same **missable / non-Avalanche** footprint. Supports §1.3 / §6.4: delusion stack is late scaffolding, not Midgar spine.

**Implication for Ultimania “misunderstanding”:** The cargo “carrying Jenova” grammar is **Japanese shipping text**, not a bad Eidos paraphrase. Calling it a misunderstanding **without rewriting** `shpin_3` (JP or EN) is exactly the incomplete-scrub tell.

**Mod implication:** B-pass targets (`trnad_*`, `nivl_b2*`, `trnad_52`) are the same field IDs in both dumps; A-pass **keeps** `shpin_3` / Midgar-alive / Rufus-on-board.

### 5.6 Ending collapse — *FFVI* class vs VII’s “just ends” (author + stress test)

**Author stake (§1.2):** VII’s finale (find Sephiroth in the Lifestream / Safer∙Sephiroth stack → Holy vs Meteor FMV → short epilogue) is a **shadow** of *Final Fantasy VI*’s long, triumphant, character-dense ending. Cause class: **unfinished** at Nintendo rip → **ordered changes** under Sony → **no inspiration** left for a Square-class close. The limp ending is itself a **clue**.

#### Phenomenology (reception — fair as description)

| | ***Final Fantasy VI* (1994)** | ***Final Fantasy VII* (1997)** |
|--|-------------------------------|--------------------------------|
| Close texture | Long multi-character curtain call; reunion / resolve beats; **triumphant** farewell scale | Final dungeon → Sephiroth sequence → **Holy/Meteor** FMV → brief “500 years later” / party aftermath |
| Emotional grammar | Party and world get a **shared** send-off | Metaphysical duel + planetary CGI; party resolution **thin** by comparison |
| Author verdict | Prior Square **magnificent long ending** standard | “**Just ends**” — weakest part of the game |

#### Documented adjacent facts (do not by themselves prove “Sony ordered a bad ending”)

| Fact | Source class | Cuts which way |
|------|--------------|----------------|
| Staff reworked the ending **to the last second**; wanted something **“different from what we’d done in the past”** / unprecedented in FF | [V Jump / Special FFVII Talk](https://www.shinraarchaeology.com/resources/article_pdfs/v_jump_feb97_special.pdf) (Kitase lane) | **Hostile:** intentional aesthetic break from *FFVI*-style finales. **Friendly:** admits they **abandoned** the old triumphant long-ending craft; “different” can mean **exhausted / uninspired** under new brief |
| CD capacity framed as freedom from late ROM content cuts | Same talk | **Hostile** to “couldn’t finish for space.” **Friendly:** capacity ≠ inspiration; you can ship empty **emotion** on a full disc |
| Schedule pressure / late inserts (Zack, etc.); expansion to **3 discs**; “completed to the best of our ability and funding” class quotes | Secondary summaries (e.g. [Stanford STS paper](https://xenon.stanford.edu/~geksiong/papers/sts145/Squaresoft%20and%20FF7.htm)); Sakaguchi funding/ability phrasing in period press | **Friendly** to unfinished / crunch; not a memo that Sony ordered the coda |
| Optional Yuffie/Vincent ending branches cut (load / space constraints cited in period magazines) | Secondary | Proves **ending surface was trimmed**, not that the Holy/Meteor FMV was a Sony kill-order |
| Mid-game Version A leftovers + late Version B bombs (§5.5) | Script + Ultimania | **Friendly:** ontology rewrite late → **finale inherits the fog** (Lifestream will / residual Sephiroth) instead of a grounded villain’s defeat curtain call |

#### Author vs counter

| Reading | Implication |
|---------|-------------|
| **Author** | Nintendo-era Square still knew how to **end**; Sony-era VII ending is the scar of ordered plot chaos + lost inspiration |
| **Counter** | Kitase **wanted** ambiguity / anti-*FFVI* ending; Holy/Meteor FMV was the prestige CG flex; fans still debate it as deep, not weak |
| **Both can be true as reception** | Prestige FMV + ambiguous epilogue can be **intentional** and still feel like a **shadow** of *FFVI*’s human farewell |

**Open:** Dated draft of a longer *FFVI*-class VII ending cut after platform exit — not yet in hand. Absent that, §1.2 stays **author** with **strong comparative reception** and only **partial** development corroboration (late rework; “different from the past”; trimmed branch endings).

#### 5.6a Author addendum — post-Safer one-on-one as Version B scar (2026-09-07)

**Author stake:** The cinematic Cloud vs Sephiroth duel **after** Safer∙Sephiroth (forced Omnislash / residual will in a white Lifestream mindscape) feels like a **late Version B bolt-on**. Once ontology says the chase was Jenova and the “real” Sephiroth was always regenerating / waiting in the Lifestream, the game still needs a beat where you “kill Sephiroth himself” after the huge angel form. That is anticlimactic craft and **ontologically required by B**, not by a grounded villain fight.

| | ***FFVI* — Kefka** | ***FFVII* — Safer then residual duel** |
|--|--------------------|----------------------------------------|
| Climax form | Kefka becomes **huge** (God of Magic / tower) | Safer∙Sephiroth is the huge form |
| After the huge form | **Victory.** No second “Kefka’s ghost in the Lifestream” fight | Extra **1v1** vs a residual / mindscape Sephiroth |
| Author read | Prior Square: defeat the **god-form**, curtain | Version B: you still haven’t stabbed the **real** Sephiroth because he was never fully “here” |

**Separation:** Comparative craft (*FFVI* does not append a Lifestream Kefka) = **strong reception**. “Inserted late because Version B made Safer insufficient” = **author inference** until a dated draft / staff quote isolates the duel as a post-ontology add. Friendly adjacent: Kitase ending reworked to the last second (§5.6); mid-game A leftovers vs late B bombs (§5.5); Ultimania “real body at crater / will in Lifestream” stack.

**Mod implication (Version A restore):** Cut the post-Safer duel; Safer *is* the kill; use that slot for Holy/Meteor FMV + interactive epilogue (see mod `docs/ENDING_EPILOGUE.md`).

#### 5.7 Author addendum — Version B **taints the Lifestream’s rules** (2026-09-07)

**Author stake (verbatim sense):** The ending felt **anticlimactic**; that complaint is widespread and the close is **not** traditional Square farewell craft (§1.2 / §5.6). More load-bearing: Sephiroth **entering the Lifestream and remote-controlling the plot from it** never made spiritual or mechanical sense. *Advent Children* makes the taint **Jenova cells** (geostigma / memetic legacy carried when the Lifestream surges). There is no clean reason a human (even a Jenova-project SOLDIER) should **fall in by circumstance**, keep a regenerating **physical form**, and turn the Planet’s soul-cycle into an **ethereal loudspeaker**. Cloud later falls into the Lifestream (Mideel) and does **not** gain planetary remote control — he fragments / collapses. When Version B added **off-screen Nibelheim “death” + fall into the Lifestream**, it **broke Version A’s Lifestream rule**: ordinary death = dissolve into the Planet’s flow, not upload-and-command. Version B therefore **tainted the Lifestream by rewriting what the Lifestream is** — from spiritual Japanese return-cycle into a **technical Western remote-control hub**. The only entity that should ever *corrupt* spirit energy that way is **Jenova** (alien). Sephiroth’s Meteor plan was researched **before** that fall; dying into the stream should not be what **enables** the summon. Version A spine: he broke into Shinra, **stole Jenova**, went to the crater, and **did the summon** — alive.

##### What the Lifestream is sold as (early / spiritual grammar)

| Rule (Version A–friendly) | Implication |
|---------------------------|-------------|
| Spirit energy returns to the Planet when you die | You **become part of** the flow; identity dissolves |
| Mako = extracted Lifestream | Industrial sin against a **living spiritual cycle** |
| Holy / Aerith / Planet prayer | Cetra / Planet agency — not a dead man’s Wi‑Fi |
| Alien corruption (if any) | **Jenova** as extraterrestrial contaminant of life |

##### What Version B / Compilation requires

| Version B move | Rule break |
|----------------|------------|
| Sephiroth “dies” at Nibelheim (reactor fall) but **does not diffuse** | Special exception to dissolve-into-Planet |
| Will travels / waits **in** the Lifestream while body rebuilds at crater | Lifestream = **server** + body = **client** |
| Chase actors = Jenova pieces under will; real Sephiroth “beyond” | Physical villain removed; **remote** villain |
| Post-Safer residual 1v1 in white mindscape (§5.6a) | Still need to stab the **will** after the huge form |
| AC geostigma | Officially **Jenova cells** in the stream; Sephiroth then *uses* that taint — hybrid that still needs the B exception |

**Cloud contrast (in-game, fair):** Mideel Lifestream dunk → trauma, mako poisoning, identity crisis staging — **not** Meteor remote control. Same medium, opposite outcome → “fall in = become dark god” is **ad hoc** for Sephiroth alone.

**AC as friendly witness to the author’s Jenova point:** Geostigma / “Jenova’s memetic legacy” frames planetary infection as **cells in the stream**, not “a guy fell in once.” Compilation still keeps Sephiroth-as-will using that infection — so AC **does not exonerate** B; it **exposes** that the corruption grammar belongs to **Jenova**, while Sephiroth-in-stream remains the special pleading.

##### Author vs counter

| Reading | Implication |
|---------|-------------|
| **Author** | Version B **violates** the Lifestream’s spiritual rule set; turns Japanese soul-cycle into Western tech contradiction; only Jenova should taint; Meteor plan should not require the fall |
| **Counter** | Jenova cells in Sephiroth let his will resist diffusion (special biology); Kitase/Nojima intended layered mystery; AC is consistent sequel grammar |
| **Both can be true as craft** | You can *patch* B with cell jargon and still have **broken the early spiritual contract** players learned (death = return, not remote HQ) |

**Separation:** Anticlimax + non-traditional close = **reception** (§5.6). Cloud≠Sephiroth Lifestream outcomes + AC Jenova-cell taint + mid-game “carrying Jenova” alive chase (§5.5) = **strong textual/phenomenological support**. “Ordered Westernization of the Lifestream” / “broke Version A creators’ rules” = **author** motive/craft accusation until a draft shows the fall-into-stream as a dated insert.

**Mod implication (Version A):** Sephiroth never needs the Lifestream as command center. He remains **alive**, uses **Jenova** (cargo / genes / discarded pieces), reaches the crater, summons. Lifestream stays Planet / flower-girl spiritual medium — optional mako trauma for Cloud as **shame/guilt**, not identity install and not villain Wi‑Fi. Cut residual-will duel (§5.6a). Soft AC stigma allusions = **Jenova-cell rumor**, not proof Sephiroth-was-always-the-stream.

#### 5.8 Author investigation — **Aeris (S)** vs **Aerith (TH)**, Sephiroth’s *-su*, Hebrew *sefirot*, and industry divide (2026-09-07)

**Author stake (expanded):** *Aeris* (S) matches the **Japanese phonetic plan** for the flower girl. English **th** is not how Japanese writes or says the name — **エアリス** (*Earisu*). The same holds for the villain: **セフィロス** (*Sefirosu*); Japanese speakers do **not** pronounce an English *th* in “Sephiroth,” they land on **-su**. So TH is a **Western alphabet convention**, not proof that Japanese creatives were “thinking in *th*.” Playable 1997 EN uses **Aeris** under **Michael Baskett**’s localization lane (Squaresoft USA; Honeywood: roughly one man + limited JP help, no editors). Whether Baskett “chose S over TH” or simply romanized the kana he had, the **released English product** is S. Later industry products — especially ***Kingdom Hearts* (2002)** — shipped **Aerith** to a huge Western audience that had lived with **Aeris** for five years. That is when the spelling fight left obscure forums and became a **community-wide schism**. The **division came from the industry’s rename**, not from fans inventing two camps for fun. Even if 1997 TH-in-Latin print / “air+earth” notes were accidents or marketing romaji, **by 2002 the split was no longer accidental** — the industry chose to **rebrand** the OG spelling as error and harden TH. That is **divide-and-conquer reception engineering** (intent optional; effect clear). It rhymes with Version B’s broader move: take a **Japanese phonetic / spiritual product** and **Westernize** the surface (Kabbalah-flavored *Sephiroth*, Earth-anagram *Aerith*) until the OG release looks “wrong.”

##### Phonology (strong for author)

| Name | Japanese (game) | Spoken class | English *th*? |
|------|-----------------|--------------|---------------|
| Flower girl | **エアリス** | *e-a-ri-su* | **No** — kana ends in **ス** |
| Villain | **セフィロス** | *se-fi-ro-su* | **No** — same **-su** landing |
| Author read | Japanese plan is **S-class phonetics** | EN *th* is **added** when writing Latin letters | Treating *th* as Japanese “original intent” inverts the script |

**Asymmetry tell:** EN **always** wrote the villain **Sephiroth** (with *th*) while writing the heroine **Aeris** (with *s*) in the same Baskett-era product — both from *-su* kana. That alone shows **TH was an English-side convention**, applied inconsistently, not a faithful mirror of Japanese speech.

##### Baskett / 1997 localization (documented)

| Fact | Source class |
|------|--------------|
| PC credits: localization **Michael Baskett**; technical translation Aiko Ito / David Jones; PS also credits Baskett (Product Development Coordinator) | Game credits / [Julkunen 2022 thesis](https://oulurepo.oulu.fi/bitstream/handle/10024/21426/nbnfioulu-202211103562.pdf) |
| Honeywood: translation left largely to Baskett + limited JP help; **no editors** / full QA of later eras | Fenlon / MultiLingual summaries |
| Playable EN preset / dialogue token: **Aeris** / `{AERIS}` | Shipped product; EN PC dumps in Version A mod worktree |
| Honeywood later: name “supposed to be” air+earth; translators couldn’t get timely design info | Fenlon 2011 interview (secondary) |

##### Hebrew *sefirot* / *Sephiroth* (author-friendly; traditions ≠ proof)

| Fact | Implication |
|------|-------------|
| Hebrew **סְפִירוֹת** (*sefirot*) — root ס־פ־ר; **no English *th* digraph** in the Hebrew orthography | English **Sephiroth** / *Sephirot* are **Western romanization traditions** (Christian Cabala / esoterica / game EN), not “how Hebrew spells TH” |
| JP game uses **セフィロス**, not a Hebrew spelling | Square’s Japanese product is **katakana loan-sound**, then EN maps it to Kabbalah-flavored Latin |
| Author | Counting on “tradition says Sephiroth” does **not** prove Japanese staff heard *th*; it proves **Westernization of the letter-form** |

##### Kingdom Hearts 2002 — when the divide went mainstream (documented reception hinge)

| Beat | Detail |
|------|--------|
| 1997–2001 | Western players finish OG / Tactics-era products with **Aeris** |
| **2002** ***Kingdom Hearts*** | Same face, on-screen / materials **Aerith**; mass Disney/Square audience |
| Aftermath | Forums → general community: “which is correct?” becomes a **loyalty test**; Compilation/Remake harden TH and teach S as “mistranslation” |
| Author | Industry **created** the two-name reality for the biggest Western cohort; fans did not invent the schism from nothing. Accident-in-1997 (if any) ≠ **purpose-by-2002** when TH is locked as brand |

KH wiki-class notes even record development uncertainty whether her spoken name would be Aeris or Aerith — evidence the **industry** was managing two Latin forms, not that Japanese speech had switched to *th*.

##### Counter-evidence (must keep visible)

| Fact | Cuts which way |
|------|----------------|
| JP **manual** Latin spelling **Aerith**; *Official Establishment File* romaji **Aerith** (~days before JP ship) | **Hostile** to “Japanese never wrote TH in Latin at all” |
| Nomura concept art “Earith” beside kana | **Hostile** to “zero TH thinking in Latin doodles” |
| Pre-release Western magazines sometimes **Aerith** | Shows TH Latin circulated **before** KH; still not the **playable EN** string |
| Staff / Honeywood air+earth / Earth-anagram stories | **Hostile** if treated as proof playable Aeris is illegitimate; **friendly** if treated as **English-wordplay preference** layered on kana |

**Author reply to counters:** Latin **Aerith** on a Japanese manual is still **romanization for Western eyes**, not evidence Japanese *pronounced* *th*. The **playable** Japanese and English experiences are **エアリス** and **Aeris**. Overwriting the latter because of marketing romaji + post-2002 brand lock is the **redaction**.

##### Validation scorecard

| Claim piece | Verdict |
|-------------|---------|
| JP phonetic plan is S-class (*-su*), not English *th* | **Strong** (エアリス / セフィロス) |
| Playable 1997 EN = **Aeris**; Baskett localization lane | **Documented** |
| Sephiroth EN *th* vs JP *-su* = Western letter convention | **Strong asymmetry** |
| Hebrew *sefirot* does not “prove” English *th* | **Strong** (orthography); Western *Sephiroth* tradition = **documented** romanization variance |
| KH 2002 ignited mass Aeris/Aerith schism | **Strong reception hinge** |
| Division originated in **industry rename**, not fan whim | **Strong as sociology of the rename**; “ordered D&C from day one” = **author** |
| “Japanese never thought TH at all” (including Latin print) | **Too strong** — manuals/art used Latin Aerith/Earith; tighten to **speech/kana + playable EN** |
| TH chosen to create future divide / Version B Westernization | **Author** (motive); Westernization *effect* after 2002 = **partial** |
| By 2002, continuing TH overwrite was no longer a mere accident | **Author-fair** given brand lock + error narrative |

##### Author vs counter (summary)

| Reading | Implication |
|---------|-------------|
| **Author** | Original **Japanese vision** = kana S-class; Baskett-era EN **Aeris** matches that; *th* is Western letter-form (same family as Kabbalah *Sephiroth*); KH 2002+ industry rename **manufactured** the divide; affirming “released product = final intent for that release” would have ended it |
| **Counter** | JP Latin Aerith + air/earth intent = always Aerith; Baskett erred; KH/Remake correct the record |
| **Both can be true as craft** | English **wordplay** can exist on a design sheet **and** still not justify a permanent war that treats the shipped OG EN name as illegitimate |

**Separation:** Kana phonetics, Baskett/Aeris ship, `{AERIS}` tokens, Sephiroth asymmetry, Hebrew orthography, KH 2002 hinge = **documented / strong**. “TH inserted into development specifically to D&C later” / “Version B plot-team ordered the spelling war” = **author speculation**. “Accident then purpose by 2002” = **author** reading of brand behavior after the hinge.

**Mod implication:** Keep **Aeris**. Do not rename to Aerith. Do not “fix” Sephiroth to a pedantic *Sephiros* either — shipped EN villain name stays; the point is **not** inventing new romanizations, it is **refusing the TH heroine overwrite campaign** and recognizing *th* as Western surface, not Japanese speech proof. SAC/Remake TH = their lane.

## 6. Zack Fair — late insert and “why does he exist?”

### 6.1 Documented creation facts

| Fact | Source |
|------|--------|
| Zack **not** in original scenario | [Wikipedia Zack Fair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zack_Fair) |
| Nojima wanted Cloud’s memories proven false; **Zack invented as mechanism** | Same |
| Aerith’s first love slot; early ideas included **Sephiroth** as that love | Ultimania / wiki summaries |
| Before Zack, false SOLDIER memories / persona angled toward **Sephiroth** (Ultimania Omega lineage) | [Zack Fandom — development](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Zack_Fair) |
| Nomura designed Zack **late**; Kitase learned the Cloud↔Zack link in **test play** | Wikipedia / Ultimania |
| Nojima asked staff to **retro-insert foreshadowing** before revealing Zack | Wikipedia |

### 6.2 Author vs documented intent

| Author | Documented Nojima intent |
|--------|---------------------------|
| Zack has **no point**; Cloud as smaller SOLDIER who saw Nibelheim is enough | Zack = vehicle for **mystery**, false personality, Aerith emotional link |
| Duality ruins grounded story | Duality was the **goal** of the late scenario pass |
| **Colossal tell:** with Zack deleted, only the **false-memory order** remains as motive | Matches Nojima’s own admitted sequence: false past **first**, Zack **as mechanism** |

**Corroboration for author (strong on mechanism, open on “ordered”):** Development history **agrees** Zack is late scaffolding for an already-chosen **prove-the-past-false** brief — not Midgar-era bedrock. Author upgrade (§1.1): that brief was not Nojima’s free aesthetic whim but an **imposed mandate** whose fan-effect is division / depression / suicide risk. **Documented:** mechanism. **Author:** mandate + harm intent.

**Prior soft-spot inverted:** Earlier drafts treated “false memory planned before Zack” as a *weakness* for “delete Zack, restore ground.” Author now reads the same fact as the **smoking structural tell** — Zack exists *because* the past must be false; the character is the instrument, not the reason.

### 6.3 Change surface if Zack never exists (author preferred)

| System | Without Zack |
|--------|----------------|
| Nibelheim flashback | Cloud present as infantry / failed SOLDIER applicant; fights Sephiroth; lives |
| Buster Sword | Cloud’s or a mentor’s — no Gongaga parents beat |
| Aerith | Attraction without “you remind me of my dead boyfriend” |
| Mako poisoning escape | Cloud escapes Shinra labs alone or with different helper |
| Kalm lie | Soften or remove; trauma gaps without wholesale identity theft |

**Surface area:** Larger than the Shinra stab alone (multiple flashbacks, Gongaga, ending reunion imagery), but still a **bounded** character deletion — Remake trilogy’s Zack-world shows how **large** the insert became once Compilation owned it (§7).

### 6.4 Author — OG insert vs franchise Zack; delusion not required for control (2026-09-06)

**Author claim (verbatim stake in §1.3):** The Zack fans meet as a **major franchise protagonist** (*Crisis Core*, Remake timelines) **did not exist in that capacity** during original development. In 1997 he is a **late plot device** for Cloud’s identity twist; inclusion is **minimal, missable, and disconnected from Avalanche’s motivations**. Scripts **attempt** to make Zack-self-delusion the reason Sephiroth/Jenova can control Cloud; that hitch is **not necessary** — Jenova **already demonstrates** control power **without** the Zack trigger. Dialogue never **proves** necessity. Therefore the **Zack delusion can be removed cleanly**.

| Check | Read |
|-------|------|
| Development | Late insert for false-past mechanism — **documented** (§6.1) |
| Shipping weight | Optional mansion flashback / sparse name-drops vs Midgar Avalanche plot that **never** needs him — **author phenomenology** (friendly to “missable”) |
| Avalanche motives | Planet / reactors / gil / Barret’s war — **no Zack dependency** on the required path |
| Jenova control | Black Materia handoff, clones, Reunion pressure, Whirlwind influence — **exist as cells/will grammar** whether or not Cloud “is Zack” |
| Clean cut | Strip identity-theft / Lifestream “your past was his” without inventing a new control system — **author** change-surface claim; Version A leftovers already ignore the delusion for the chase (§5.5) |

**Mod note:** Fan rewrite that **keeps a real Zack** (friend who died; vengeance motive) is a **separate design choice** from keeping the **delusion**. §1.3 argues the **delusion** is disposable; Compilation Zack stature is **post-hoc**.

---

## 7. Remake / Compilation — escalation after the Nintendo divorce

| Product | Escalation relative to 1997 ambiguity |
|---------|----------------------------------------|
| *Advent Children* | Sephiroth remnants / geostigma — will that won’t die |
| *Crisis Core* | Zack as full protagonist; Nibelheim retold through him |
| *Remake* | Shinra HQ: clones / Jenova Dreamweaver staging; Sephiroth more present as metaphysical antagonist |
| *Rebirth* / multi-timeline Zack | Author: “took the Zack plot to extremes” |
| Masamune “at will” | Author: Remake-era magic-sword manifestation — further unmoors grounded duel grammar |

**Vacuum inverse rhyme ([`VACUUM_INVERSE.md`](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md)):** Long silence / Compilation drip / Remake “return” answers pre-viral lore hunger while **deepening** duality so the fan base never reconverges on one Midgar-grounded reading. **Inferred** control read — not a Square Enix memo.

**PP adjacency:** Post-VII “containment” taste already in [FF I–VII dossier §7](/influence/predictive_programming/investigations/final-fantasy-i-vii-tartaria-mudflood-predictive-programming-investigation.md#7-authors-stake--post-vii-spin-offs-and-containment).

## 8. Book inspiration — rumor hunt + *Notebook* → Mother 3 (documented)

### 8.1 Author ask (FF7 war novel)

Find **any citation** that *FFVII* was **based on a book**, preferably a **war story**. Separately: author named ***The Notebook*** because of ***Mother 3***, not because Square adapted Kristóf for Cloud.

### 8.2 Ágota Kristóf → *Mother 3* (documented) — then author agenda read

**Documented:**

| Fact | Source |
|------|--------|
| Itoi cites ***Le Grand Cahier*** (*The Notebook*) as inspiration; “similar to an RPG,” “incredible presence”; twins’ bond | [Starmen.net EB64 interview 5](http://starmen.net/eb64/interviews/5.php) (Itoi: Lucas/Claus names from the novel; Hayakawa Press Japan) |
| Lucas / Claus named after Kristóf twin narrators | [Wikipedia: *The Notebook* (1986)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Notebook_(1986_novel)); [Ágota Kristóf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agota_Kristof) |
| Trilogy structure includes later volumes that **destabilize** earlier “truth” (*The Proof*, *The Third Lie*) | [Notebook Trilogy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Notebook_Trilogy) |
| ***Notebook Trilogy* content floor:** graphic violence including **sexual violence against children**; StoryGraph/reader CW lanes flag **pedophilia** and **grooming** | [Old Paper & Cats](https://oldpaper.uglyporcelaincat.com/the-notebook-the-proof-the-third-lie/); [StoryGraph CW 37](https://app.thestorygraph.com/book_reviews/6a296027-5450-4af0-bd4f-07301cf476cf/content_warning/37); [StoryGraph CW 18](https://app.thestorygraph.com/book_reviews/6a296027-5450-4af0-bd4f-07301cf476cf/content_warning/18) — full chain locked in [**AU-056 §8.1**](mother-3-earthbound-64-magypsy-rupture-investigation.md) |

**Author finding (2026-09-06) — Bingo:** Itoi did not merely borrow twin names from a “dark war book.” He pointed Mother at a trilogy whose **documented content class** is child abuse / sexual violence against children / grooming-adjacent. That sits upstream of *Mother 3*’s **Ionia “endure it” → PK Love** beat ([AU-056 §2.4](mother-3-earthbound-64-magypsy-rupture-investigation.md#24-ionia-hot-spring--endure-it--pk-love-corroborated--grooming-pattern-read-author)) — literary cite and Magypsy scene as **one program**.

**Author (not Itoi’s stated intent):**

| Claim | Tier |
|-------|------|
| Kristóf match is **weak** as honest adaptation; dark twins ≠ organic Mother craft | Author taste |
| Cite + Magypsy (“Magipsy”) gender furniture + Japan-only release = **ordered compromise**, divide-and-conquer product — not “make everyone happy” | Author |
| Same **false-memory / ungrounded-past** doctrine as FF7 | Author parallel (§8.4) |

**Magypsy / localization — full controversy dossier:** [*Mother 3* / EarthBound 64 (**AU-056**)](mother-3-earthbound-64-magypsy-rupture-investigation.md) — Khan controversy-kill rumor vs Reggie business denial; Magypsy reception inventory; N64 cancel chronology; Hamano credit-omission parallel.

**Magypsy / localization reports (summary):** Secondary press ties Western non-release / cancelled ports to Magypsy controversy risk and Itoi nuance ([Eurogamer / ResetEra report lane](https://www.eurogamer.net/controversial-elements-scuppered-mother-3-western-release-report); producer Kameoka cites translation difficulty ([Nintendo Everything](https://nintendoeverything.com/mother-3-producer-shares-his-opinion-on-why-the-game-hasnt-seen-an-english-release/)); Reggie: content “not at all” the issue — [Eurogamer Bloomberg](https://www.eurogamer.net/nintendos-lack-of-mother-3-localisation-was-business-decision-reggie-fils-aime-insists)). **Author:** agenda payload; non-release consistent with divide-and-conquer.

| Use in this file | Tier |
|------------------|------|
| Explains author’s **“notebook story”** reference | **Documented** via Mother 3 / Itoi |
| Proof Square adapted Kristóf for FF7 | **None** |
| Ordered agenda / suicide motive | **Author** |

### 8.3 FF7 book-hunt results (2026-09-06)

| Candidate | What it is | Link to FF7? |
|-----------|------------|--------------|
| **War novel original** (unnamed) | Author rumor | **No citation located** — dead end until print OCR |
| Arthur C. Clarke ***Childhood’s End*** | SF Overmind | Stronger for ***Xenogears***; fan Lifestream genealogy only |
| ***Xenogears* rejected FF7 pitch** | Takahashi/Saga | Conflation path for “FF7’s dark novel” folklore |
| *Parasite Eve* novel | Square *did* adapt a book | Sibling project — easy mis-attach |
| Myth / Kabbalah / Melville / Dante | Names + fan essays | Not war memoir |
| Sakaguchi mother’s death | Lifestream theme | Documented personal |

**Verdict:** FF7 war-book = **uncited**. Kristóf belongs under **Mother 3** (documented), then under **author false-memory cluster** with FF7 (§8.4) — not under “Square’s FF7 novel.”

### 8.4 False-memory mandate cluster — FF7 × Mother 3

| Title | Grounded past available? | Twist | Mechanism / furniture | Author read |
|-------|--------------------------|-------|------------------------|-------------|
| ***FFVII*** | Cloud as small soldier who **saw** Nibelheim | Past is **Zack’s** / constructed SOLDIER self | Zack late insert; Jenova identity fog | Ordered: past must be false |
| ***Mother 3*** | Twin brothers, village, war/invasion spine | Identity / memory / “who you are” destabilized (Claus path; dark twin grammar from Kristóf) | Lucas/Claus names from *Notebook*; Magypsy agenda beat | Ordered: same doctrine + culture-war payload |
| Shared effect | Real arcs / schoolyard consensus | Postmodern chaos; fan civil war | “Mystery” prestige | Depression / divide / suicide-risk **agenda** |

**Author lock:** Present and future may remain “fun adventure”; **grounded past is forbidden.** Someone behind closed doors can ask a writer whether they ruined a solid plot for a suicide bump — and the answer is they know; **that is the point.**

**Documented floor under the lock:** Nojima’s false-past → Zack mechanism; Itoi’s *Notebook* cite; Magypsy localization friction. **Not documented:** a shared handler memo ordering both titles; epidemiology of “FF7/Mother 3 caused suicides.”

## 10. Weaknesses in the theory (required stress test)

Honest falsifiers and soft spots — **do not skip**.

### 10.1 “Nintendo R&D planned Midgar / owned the story”

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **No employment/credit trail** | Shipped credits and 1997 interviews name **Square** staff (Sakaguchi, Kitase, Nomura, Nojima, Naora, Uematsu…). No Nintendo scenario credit for *FFVII*. |
| **Wrong CD object risk** | SNES-CD collapse ≠ documented *FFVII* build; Mana is the clearer SNES-CD scar. |
| **Pre-rendered ≠ Nintendo authorship** | Technique shared with *Alone in the Dark* / DKC-class pipelines; Kitase cites **Western PC** inspirations. |
| **Author may mean institutional *era*** | “Nintendo-era Square” (cart partnership culture) vs literal Kyoto R&D writers — **restate claim** to survive critique. |

### 10.2 “Story altered because of Sony move”

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **Story churn is normal** | Joe→Cloud, Aerith/Tifa swaps, Sephiroth as Aerith’s love — Ultimania-class churn happened **inside Square** on PS. |
| **Kitase *Jaws* quote** | Absent Sephiroth framed as **directorial intent**, not platform politics. |
| **No dated patch proving Jenova mimic post-dates a Sephiroth-alive lock** | Need early script / event planner dump with timestamps. |
| **Capacity motive is on-record** | Sakaguchi/Kitase repeatedly cite **megabytes and price**, not “rewrite the villain ontology.” |

### 10.3 “Jenova-cell plot ruins everything / was the sabotage”

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **Some players loved the mystery** | Unreliable narrator + twist = critical praise lane; “ruins” is **taste + coherence** critique, not universal reception. |
| **Internal consistency exists on paper** | Ultimania Omega can be read as a closed system — author argues it **fails schoolyard consensus**, which is a **different** claim (and stronger for fracture-as-control). |
| **Remake escalation ≠ 1997 sabotage proof** | Compilation can worsen a 1997 ambiguity without proving 1996 intent. |

### 10.4 “Zack should not exist” / false-memory mandate

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **Documented purpose** | Mystery + Aerith link + false persona — Nojima **wanted** that layer (or was tasked with it). |
| **Author inversion** | “Wanted” ≠ disproof of **order**; colossal tell still stands: **mechanism without character necessity**. |
| **Mother 3 parallel ≠ shared memo** | Itoi↔Kristóf is **documented**; shared handler with Nojima is **inferred**. |
| **Suicide / depression agenda** | Strong author moral conclusion; **no** cited epidemiology tying FF7/Mother 3 ship dates to suicide bumps in this file — keep as **motive thesis**, seek proxies later (hotline discourse, copycat lore, clinical panic about “games cause suicide” eras). |
| **Magypsy = “trans agenda”** | Characters and localization friction **documented**; “ordered to promote suicide via gender payload” stacks **author** on secondary press. |

### 10.5 “All post-VII FF are garbage / leftover VII music”

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **Commercial / critical counterexamples** | *FFX*, *XIV*, etc. have large affirming audiences — absolute “all garbage” is **author aesthetic verdict**. |
| **Leftover music — split the claim** | **FF9 intentional remakes of early-series themes** = **documented** (Uematsu chose nostalgia). **FF8↔FF9 melodic overlap** = fan dispute only. **Unused VII-pool → VIII/IX** = still **no track ledger** — but **industry precedents** make the *mechanism* ordinary (§1.4; Rare Dream; Kirby cancelled → RTDL; Morricone unused *Thing* → *Hateful Eight*). |
| **IP silence ≠ proof of specific cues** | Company owns the vault and can redeploy under the same composer name without scandal — that **supports reasonableness**, not a VII→VIII map. |
| **Correlation ≠ sabotage of VII’s script** | Music decline after exit can be true while Jenova/Zack still being Square-internal choices. |

### 10.6 “War book original + Third Lie pattern” / Mother 3

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **FF7 war novel** | Still **uncited**. |
| **Kristóf** | **Documented for Mother 3**, not FF7 — author’s original naming now **corrected** in-file. |
| **“Ordered, not artistic”** | Falsifiable only with production memos / producer contradiction; Itoi’s public praise of the novel cuts against “reluctant order” unless order = *use* Kristóf / false-past grammar regardless of taste match. |

### 10.7 “Post–Version B mainline = self-delusion cascade” (§1.5)

| Problem | Detail |
|---------|--------|
| **“Nearly every” → scoped** | Author now scopes to **non-MMO** mainline **except *XII*** — still needs a one-line cite per remaining title (VIII–X, XIII, XV, XVI / Clive-class) or the claim overreaches. |
| **MMO carve-out is soft** | “Obvious reasons” is fair for service games; critics can still ask whether *XIV* MSQ identity twists rhyme thematically. |
| ***XII* as NSA-aligned** | Occuria / smash-the-stone agency read is **coherent**; **NSA-camp** label is **author** until paired with the HL2 / *Children of Men* methodology explicitly. |
| **Battle-tradition “end”** | Gebelli → Ito → Tactics → *XII* staff path is **documented**; “end of tradition = refreshing story outlier” is **interpretive**. Matsuno mid-exit complicates authorship purity. |
| **Counterexamples / soft edges** | *FFVI* Terra amnesia still blurs external wipe vs self-fracture for critics. |
| **Trend ≠ ordered doctrine** | Industry fashion can explain Cloud-class cascade without a VII-B **mandate** memo. |
| **Still useful as pattern** | I–VI honest-self vs Cloud/Tidus/Clive-class + ***XII* carve-out** is the load-bearing map for Version A restoration. |

### 10.8 Strongest surviving core (after stress test)

Even if “Nintendo R&D wrote Midgar” **fails**, the following can still stand:

1. **False-memory mandate** is the load-bearing twist; **Zack is the tool** — documented sequence matches author’s “colossal” read.
2. **High-leverage late changes** + Jenova identity stack create **permanent fan civil war** — now backed by **§5.5** A/B dialogue split (mid-game A leftovers vs Whirlwind B bombs).
3. ***Mother 3*** supplies a **second franchise** where *Notebook* / twin-dark / ungrounded identity grammar is **on record** — cluster, not isolated Square quirk.
4. **Platform divorce** + craft collapse still rhyme with Rare/DKC.
5. Remakes **invest in the fracture**.
6. **Ending** fails the *FFVI*-class triumphant long send-off (§5.6) — reception tell aligned with author unfinished/uninspired read; Kitase “different from the past” cuts both ways.
7. **Post–Version B delusion cascade** (§1.5) — series-theme pattern reinforcing the mandate read; title ledger still open.
8. **Ordered harm / suicide agenda** remains **author conclusion** pending proxy evidence.

## 11. Author’s open claims (**AU-055**)

| # | Claim | Prior art | Tier |
|---|-------|-----------|------|
| 1 | *FFVII* had an **agreed simpler** hero/villain revenge spine before Nintendo exit | Pieces of early-draft journalism exist; **agreement + simplicity package** author | Author |
| 2 | Midgar act = **most Nintendo-planned** portion | Technique + era adjacency; **not** credit-documented | Author |
| 3 | Shinra stab / Jenova-as-Sephiroth is a **few-beat ontology bomb** that ruins grounded plot | Ambiguity **documented**; “ruin/sabotage” author | Partial |
| 3a | Mid-game **Version A** dialogue (Sephiroth alive / **carrying Jenova**) was **left unscrubbed** when Version B locked; Ultimania calls carrying a “misunderstanding” without fixing boxes; **same seam in JP PS1 + EN PC dumps** (§5.5a) | Script inventory + Ultimania + **touphScript / untrans dumps** **documented**; “mistake vs intentional mystery” + sabotage motive **author** | Partial |
| 4 | Crystal-North Sephiroth + cell puppets were **unnecessary** vs alive Sephiroth using alien genes for revenge | Coherence preference; reinforced by §5.5 A-table | Author |
| 5 | **Zack should not exist**; Cloud-as-witness suffices — Zack only serves the **false-memory mandate** | Late insert **documented**; “should not” / mandate-as-order author | Partial |
| 5a | Franchise Zack (major protagonist) **≠** 1997 insert; OG Zack is **late, minimal, missable**, **disconnected from Avalanche**; **Zack delusion** is **not necessary** for Jenova/Sephiroth control of Cloud and **can be removed cleanly** | Late insert **documented**; missable/Avalanche-disconnect + control-without-delusion = **author** structural read (§1.3 / §6.4) | Partial |
| 6 | Remake Masamune-at-will + Zack multiverse = **post-Nintendo escalation** of the sabotage | Remake content documented; motive author | Partial |
| 7 | FF7 war-book original still sought; ***Notebook*** belongs to **Mother 3** (Itoi) then cluster-read with FF7 | Itoi cite **documented**; FF7 war novel uncited | Partial |
| 8 | Shipped duality produces **MKUltra-style** schoolyard divide-and-conquer fandom | Reception sociology author | Author |
| 9 | Post-VII mainline = **garbage**; music largely **VII leftovers** | Taste + leftover hypothesis; **vault-reuse mechanism** now backed by cross-industry precedents (§1.4); VII→VIII/IX **track ledger** still open ([Uematsu](/influence/stolen_credit/nobuo-uematsu.md)) | Author / partial |
| 10 | Square + Rare pre-rendered golden age was **sabotaged** so only shadows remain | Parallel craft rupture; vacuum inverse | Author extension |
| 11 | **False-memory-of-the-past** was **ordered** into FF7 and likely Mother 3; present/future adventure allowed; grounded past forbidden | Mechanism documented (Nojima; Itoi↔Kristóf); **order + shared doctrine** author | Author |
| 12 | Magypsy (“Magipsy”) + Mother 3 non-US release = **agenda / divide-and-conquer**, not happy craft | Localization friction documented; agenda author | Partial |
| 13 | Agenda effect class: fan **depression / suicide risk**; writers know; that is the point | Moral/pattern conclusion — **no epi cite in-file yet** | Author |
| 14 | VII **ending** is weakest link — Lifestream hunt + FMV coda is a **shadow** of *FFVI*’s long triumphant finale; unfinished at Nintendo rip + ordered Sony changes → **uninspired** close; that limp ending is a **clue** | Comparative reception strong; Kitase “different from the past” + late rework **documented**; “ordered / unfinished because Sony” **author** | Partial |
| 15 | After *FFVII* **Version B**, **every non-MMO** mainline (ex. ***XII***) centers on **self-delusion / fabricated memories / trauma false-self** (Cloud / Tidus / Clive-class); **MMOs carve out**; ***XII*** = **refreshing outlier** (Vaan honest; cosmic Occuria lie ends when **Ashe smashes the stone** — humanity writes history); possible **NSA-aligned** agency plot; battle-tradition terminus Nasir → Ito → Tactics → *XII* | Series-theme **author pattern** (§1.5); staff battle lineage **documented**; NSA-camp **author**; remaining non-MMO one-liners open | Author / partial |
| 16 | Post-Safer **Cloud vs residual Sephiroth** duel is a **late Version B bolt-on** (“real Sephiroth always in Lifestream”); *FFVI* Kefka ends at the **huge** form — no second Lifestream ghost fight; Safer *should* be the kill | Comparative craft strong (§5.6a); “late add because B” **author** until draft/staff isolate | Author / partial |
| 17 | Version B **taints Lifestream rules**: fall-in ≠ remote-control hub; death should **dissolve** into Planet; only **Jenova** should corrupt spirit energy; Cloud’s Lifestream fall ≠ Sephiroth powers; Meteor plan was researched **pre-fall** — A spine = steal Jenova → crater → summon **alive**; B turns spiritual JP cycle into **Western ethereal loudspeaker** | AC geostigma = Jenova cells **documented**; Cloud≠Sephiroth outcomes **documented**; “broke A creators’ rules / ordered Westernization” **author** (§5.7) | Author / partial |
| 18 | **Aeris (S)** matches JP phonetic plan (**エアリス**); playable 1997 EN under **Baskett** = Aeris; **TH** is Western letter convention (same family as EN **Sephiroth** vs JP **セフィロス** / Hebrew *sefirot* without *th*); ***Kingdom Hearts* (2002)** industry rename ignited mass schism — division from **industry**, not fans; by 2002 TH overwrite is purpose/brand not mere accident; Version B–class Westernization of a Japanese surface | Kana + Aeris ship + `{AERIS}` + Sephiroth asymmetry + KH hinge **documented/strong**; JP Latin Aerith manuals **counter-adjacent**; D&C-from-day-one / ordered Version B spelling war **author** (§5.8) | Author / partial |

## Limits and disclaimers

**Prisca sapientia (epistemic foundation):** This investigation assumes [**prisca sapientia**](/docs/PRISCA_SAPIENTIA.md)—the historical and philosophical belief that the ancients possessed a vast, profound understanding of the universe, nature, and theology that was subsequently lost or degraded. Modern consensus science and institutions are not treated as default truth; evidence tiers below adjudicate specific claims.

- **Fiction vs evidence:** *Final Fantasy VII* and *Mother 3* are commercial video games. Plot analysis is **textual / reception / development-history** work — not a claim that fictional plots equal documented psyops memos.
- **Author thesis:** §1, §1.1, §1.2, §1.3, §1.4, §1.5, §5.5 author rows, §5.6–§5.8 author rows, §6.4, and §11 are **first-class** Paradigm Threat stakes. They are **not** automatically factual. “Incomplete scrub,” “ending just ends,” “Zack delusion removable,” “VII vault reuse is reasonable,” “post–Version B mainline delusion cascade,” “Version B taints Lifestream rules,” and “Aeris/Aerith divide-and-conquer” are **strong textual / reception / industry-pattern descriptions**; “ordered sabotage under Sony” / “ordered Westernization of the Lifestream” remain **motive**. Suicide/depression **agenda** claims are **motive conclusions** until proxy evidence is filed.
- **Tiers:** In-game English script + Ultimania translations > encyclopedia summaries > localization secondary press > author pattern inference.
- **Cross-links:** Mother 3 / EarthBound, Rare/DKC, vacuum inverse are **thematic rhymes** unless a shared primary appears.
- **Assistant bias:** Prefer documenting **A/B script seams** and **false-memory mechanisms** over asserting **ordered suicide doctrine** without new receipts.
