Timeline Update: Massive Condensation, Mars Catastrophe, Operation Mockingbird, and PDF Shrinks to 420 Pages

Thirteen commits since the last update bring the project to v1.2.1 with 185 entries, 185 content files, and 157 images. The headline: total word count slashed from 146,863 → 75,189 words (nearly half), the PDF dropped from 548 → 420 pages (37.6 MB), and seven new articles were added even as the book got dramatically shorter.

Massive Content Condensation: 146,863 → 75,189 Words

The single largest editing pass in the project’s history. Over ~40 articles were tightened in a systematic prose-reduction sweep across all chapters:

• Batch condensation (cfb78ba): 146,863 → 89,891 words — aggressive tightening with all facts, statements, and sentiment preserved. No images removed
• Micro-pass (04e01f8): 75,724 → 75,189 words — a further 535-word trim across 37 files
• The ≤90,000 word target was met, then beaten. Current count: ~75,189 words

The Napoleon section was restructured and expanded with dedicated child articles:

PDF & DOCX Export Improvements

Major reductions in page count through formatting changes alone:

1. Removed copyright/version page (page 2) — saves 1 page per export
2. Replaced full-page Part dividers with inline big headers — 500 → 476 pages (saved 24 pages of blank dividers)
3. Justified text alignment with TextColumns for mixed-format paragraphs — 432 → 420 pages

Cross-Reference Link Refactor

All internal timeline links were refactored in a two-step process:

1. Converted all cross-reference links to /timeline?event= query format (0b2c585)
2. Rewrote to clean URL format /timeline/<eventId> (4e3dfab)

Also fixed a TypeError: t.split bug caused by object-type media entries in events.json — all converted to string paths (429e187).

Article Rename

• “The Length of a Year Was 225 Days” shortened to “The 225-Day Year” with subtitle added (ab00589)
